Congress says FIIs pulled Rs 4.03 lakh crore in 2026, blames BJP

The Congress on Monday blamed the economic policies of the Narendra Modi government for foreign institutional investors pulling out of Indian markets. Addressing a press conference, senior Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil claimed FIIs had withdrawn Rs 4.03 lakh crore from Indian markets between January and September this year.
Gohil said foreign investors offloaded around Rs 29,000 crore in the three trading sessions of September 29, 30 and October 1. He claimed foreign portfolio ownership in National Stock Exchange-listed companies had declined to about 15.8 per cent, a 17-year low, and accused the BJP-led government of wrecking the economy and promoting crony capitalism.
Data trackers linked to NSDL cite equity net selling of more than Rs 3.05 lakh crore for January to September 2026, lower than the Congress figure. The party’s claim counts a broader set of withdrawals. The BJP has not responded to the specific numbers. The Congress said sustained outflows showed weakening investor confidence, while the government has pointed to strong domestic buying by mutual funds and insurers.
