Spain’s Housing Crisis Explained: Why the Country Faces Snap Polls

Spain is heading for a snap election on November 29. The vote comes after years of anger over a housing crisis that has put home ownership out of reach for many.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez dissolved parliament after lawmakers rejected two emergency housing decrees last week. The measures aimed to cap rents, pause evictions and limit corporate purchases of homes.

The crisis has built for years. Rents and house prices have soared in cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Wages have not kept pace. Young people now spend a huge share of their income on rent. Protests have spread nationwide, with demonstrators camping at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol.

A Madrid court refused an emergency request to clear the protest camp. The encampment has made housing the central issue of the campaign.

The government’s plan is to re-approve the decrees through a standing body of 69 caretaker lawmakers. They would apply temporarily until a new parliament forms.

Sanchez has been in power since 2018. Polls show his Socialist Party trailing the conservative Popular Party and the far-right Vox. If he loses, one of Europe’s last left-wing governments would fall.
