Lockerbie bombing trial set for January 2027 in US

A US judge has set January 2027 for the trial of a former Libyan intelligence operative accused of building the bomb that brought down Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988.
US District Judge Dabney Friedrich set jury selection to begin on January 19, 2027, in federal court in Washington. The trial of Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi was postponed in August after defense lawyers asked for more time to review newly disclosed evidence.
Mas’ud has pleaded not guilty to two criminal charges linked to the destruction of the aircraft. Prosecutors allege he engineered the bomb that destroyed the plane minutes after takeoff from London on December 21, 1988, killing 270 people.
Of the 259 passengers and crew who died, 190 were American, making it the worst terror attack on the US until 9/11. Eleven more people died on the ground in Lockerbie.
The case has been delayed several times. The proceedings are expected to last around two months.
