France’s summer heatwave cost at least 16 billion euros

Paris, October 6: France's repeated summer heatwaves cost the country at least 16 billion euros, according to a parliamentary report released on Monday.

Eric Coquerel, the La France Insoumise MP who chairs the Finance Committee, presented the figure. His rapid fact-finding mission was set up in July to measure the damage.

The official statistics agency INSEE and the Treasury estimated the hit to economic activity at about 0.1 percentage points of GDP, or roughly 3 billion euros. Coquerel added health costs, farm losses, wildfire damage and lost working time to reach 16 billion.

Environment Minister Monique Barbut had earlier put the bill at 10 to 15 billion euros in August. The higher number strengthens the case for climate adaptation spending ahead of the 2027 budget debate, which starts this week.

France had its hottest summer on record with 53 days of extreme heat. Wildfires burned over 96,000 hectares. More than 7,000 excess deaths were recorded during the heatwaves.
