Mumbai Names Mhatre VC, Leaves Out Suryakumar

Mumbai have appointed 19-year-old Ayush Mhatre as vice-captain for their Ranji Trophy season opener, while leaving out Suryakumar Yadav despite him making himself available.
The 42-time champions face Chandigarh at the Wankhede from October 11. Siddhesh Lad will captain the 16-man squad, which includes India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Mhatre, who led India to the Under-19 World Cup title, has played only 13 first-class matches. Selectors want to groom him as a future captain, according to Mumbai Cricket Association sources.
Chief selector Rajesh Pawar said Suryakumar was left out so he can regain rhythm in red-ball cricket first. The former India T20I captain has not played a red-ball match in 18 months.
Shardul Thakur will miss the first two games with a fractured finger. Sarfaraz Khan keeps his place after standing in for Rishabh Pant in the Irani Cup.
Mumbai are in Elite Group D this season alongside Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Railways, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
