Bombay HC Refuses to Stay Voter Roll Deletions in Maharashtra

The Bombay High Court on October 5 refused to stay deletions from Maharashtra’s electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision, saying the Supreme Court is already seized of the issue. Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait Sethna deferred the hearing by three weeks, noting the apex court’s related hearing on October 8.
The petitioners had alleged serious flaws in the implementation of the revision exercise in Maharashtra, claiming that over 2.10 crore names face deletion without proper verification. They argued that voters were being struck off without adequate notice or a fair chance to object.
The court said it would not pass interim orders while the Supreme Court is hearing parallel petitions on the same subject. The Election Commission told the court that the revision follows due process and that no eligible voter will lose their franchise. The case will now be taken up after the Supreme Court’s hearing, keeping the controversy over voter rolls alive in poll-bound Maharashtra.
