Congo River boat collision kills at least 22, dozens rescued

At least 22 people are dead after two vessels collided on the Congo River near Ngombe on October 5.
The boat was carrying 163 people, according to officials. Rescue teams pulled 59 survivors from the water. Search operations continued into the night.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. Overcrowding is a chronic problem on the Congo River, where boats are often the only transport link between remote communities.
Deadly river accidents are frequent in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Poor vessel maintenance, night travel and a lack of safety equipment contribute to the toll.
Provincial authorities declared a period of mourning. The government promised an inquiry into the operator and the vessel's condition.
Local fishermen joined the rescue effort. Officials said the death toll could rise as divers search the wreck.
The Congo River is a vital transport artery in a country with few paved roads. The government has promised tougher safety rules after previous disasters, but enforcement on remote stretches remains weak.
