Milei gives UK two weeks to stop Falklands oil drilling

Argentine President Javier Milei has given Britain two weeks to suspend oil drilling in the Falkland Islands or face international arbitration.

Milei said Argentina would take its case to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea if London allows the Sea Lion project in the North Falkland Basin to proceed. The deadline falls around October 12.

The Sea Lion development would be the first major oil project in Falklands waters. Argentina has long claimed sovereignty over the islands, which Britain has administered since 1833.

London has not publicly responded to the ultimatum. British officials have consistently said the islanders' right to self-determination is not negotiable.

The dispute has been a recurring flashpoint in Argentine politics. Milei raised the issue during his presidential campaign and has pressed it at international forums.

Oil companies involved in the project have continued preparations while governments exchange diplomatic notes.

Britain has administered the islands since 1833. Argentina invaded in 1982, triggering a 74-day war that killed 649 Argentine and 255 British service personnel. London says the islanders' wishes are paramount.
