Sensex Jumps 473 Points To 72,382; Nifty Gains 134, Gold Slips

Benchmark equity indices ended higher on Monday as softer-than-expected US jobs data cut expectations of aggressive Federal Reserve tightening. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 472.77 points, or 0.66 per cent, to settle at 72,382.47.
The 50-share NSE Nifty climbed 133.80 points, or 0.60 per cent, to 22,555.75. Both indices snapped a four-day losing streak, rebounding from an eight-week losing run.
ITC, Eternal, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, Adani Ports, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries and Larsen & Toubro were among the major gainers. HCL Tech, HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma, Infosys and Asian Paints lagged.
Twelve of 15 major NSE sector indices ended higher, led by the Nifty FMCG index’s nearly 2 per cent gain. The Nifty PSU Bank index rose on strong second-quarter credit growth.
MCX gold slipped about one per cent, easing toward Rs 1.47 lakh per 10 grams, while silver stayed firm. Investors now await the RBI’s monetary policy decision on October 7.
