Delhi approves 2,500 AI cameras for traffic

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a Rs 1,789.52 crore Intelligent Traffic Management System for Delhi, expanding AI-assisted monitoring and automated enforcement across the capital’s road network.
The project, approved on September 30, will cover 42 traffic corridors and roll out in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance. It will cover 1,092 adaptive signal locations and 1,029 enforcement locations.
Around 2,500 new AI-enabled cameras will be installed, linking with existing networks run by Delhi Police, the traffic police and the National Highways Authority of India. The cameras will detect speeding, red-light jumping, wrong-way driving, helmet and seatbelt violations and mobile phone use while driving.
The system will also flag stolen or hot-listed vehicles, repeat offenders and vehicles linked to hit-and-run cases. Delhi Police already operates about 25,000 CCTV cameras.
Separately, AI-powered 4D radar interceptors mounted on police vehicles generated 120 e-challans in an initial trial. Camera-based challans crossed 38.95 lakh this year up to September 20.
