Ex-Anthropic researcher Coxon to testify at NYC AI hearing today

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon will testify at a New York City hearing on artificial intelligence today. Bloomberg News reported the development on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. Coxon quit Anthropic last month. He warned that the people building AI believe it could kill humanity by the end of the decade. He accused his former employer and OpenAI of gambling with lives. Coxon will appear at the request of City Council Speaker Julie Menin. She has urged AI whistleblowers to testify as lawmakers weigh bills to set safeguards around the technology. Google, OpenAI and Anthropic agreed to attend the hearing after the council threatened subpoenas. Meta was the only company to agree before the threat. Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI did not respond, prompting the council to issue an order requiring its attendance. The hearing comes amid growing debate over AI safety. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said the benefits of AI justify accepting some risks. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called on the industry to slow down.
