Ireland and Israel draw 1-1 in ill-tempered Nations League clash

Ireland and Israel drew 1-1 on Sunday in the second of their two UEFA Nations League meetings. The match concluded a fortnight dominated as much by political tensions as football. Ireland had beaten Israel 3-0 behind closed doors in Hungary in the first meeting a week ago. Sunday’s return leg was also played behind closed doors, this time in Serbia. Ireland is one of Europe’s most outspoken critics of Israel’s war in Gaza. The Football Association of Ireland had faced calls from some supporters and politicians to boycott the fixtures. Tempers flared on the pitch despite the empty stadium. Irish media reported that Ireland coach Damien Doyle accused an Israeli player of spitting at him after the half-time whistle. Reuters said it could not independently verify the allegation. Ireland’s Icelandic coach Heimir Hallgrimsson declined to comment in detail. He said it was something a disciplinary committee would look at. Israel coach Ran Ben-Shimon said he had already left the sideline and did not see the incident. Hallgrimsson said he was delighted the two-week saga was finished.
