Railways notifies Unified Pension Scheme rules

The Ministry of Railways has notified the rules for the Unified Pension Scheme for its employees covered under the National Pension System.

The Railway Board issued the notification on September 16, 2026. The rules came into force on September 21 after publication in the Official Gazette.

The scheme covers railway employees appointed on or after January 1, 2004, who are under the NPS. Casual workers, contract staff and daily-wage workers are excluded.

Employees with 10 years of qualifying service get a minimum assured pension of Rs 10,000 a month. Those with 25 years get the full assured pension: 50% of the average basic pay of the last 12 months.

Employees and the Railways will each contribute 10% of basic pay plus dearness allowance to the UPS corpus. Voluntary retirement is allowed after 20 years of service.

There is a one-time option to switch back to the NPS. It stays open until one year before retirement. The UPS itself began on April 1, 2025.
