CAF overhauls inter-club rules, player registrations

The Confederation of African Football has made three big changes to its inter-club tournaments. The CAF Executive Committee met virtually on Friday, October 2, 2026.
Players can now play for more than one club during a single CAF inter-club season. The old rule tied a player to one club for the season.
Each club can register a maximum of 40 players at any point. Clubs may replace four players in the last registration window, if those players have not played in CAF matches that season.
All disciplinary matters will now go to the Disciplinary Board. The Interclub Committee loses that role.
The changes affect the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup. The second preliminary round begins in a couple of weeks. Big clubs enter after byes in the first round.
CAF also confirmed the Women’s Champions League will run from November 1 to 15, 2026. Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will compete again after winning the COSAFA final against ZESCO Ndola Girls in August.
The new registration rules give clubs more flexibility. The player-movement change is the most significant shift for squads.
