Fridge-free vaccine stays stable two years at 30C

A new vaccine that stays stable outside a fridge for two years could transform immunisation in hot countries, researchers say.

The vaccine, called SPVX02 and developed by Stablepharma, remained stable for 24 months at 30 degrees Celsius, according to results published in eClinicalMedicine, a Lancet journal.

In a trial of 60 adults in Southampton, the vaccine was safe and produced a strong immune response. Professor Saul Faust led the study, with support from the UK Health Security Agency’s Vaccine Development and Evaluation Centre.

The World Health Organization estimates that up to half of all vaccines are wasted because the cold chain breaks down during transport and storage.

A fridge-free vaccine could reach remote clinics that lack reliable refrigeration. Stablepharma says it is now planning larger trials.

Most vaccines must be kept between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius from factory to clinic. In many parts of Africa and South Asia, keeping that cold chain unbroken across bad roads and power cuts is a daily struggle.
