Vikas Bahl to direct film on 90s UK Punjabi music

Vikas Bahl is making a film about the rise of Punjabi music in 1990s Britain. The untitled coming-of-age drama stars Jimmy Shergill, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Mona Singh and Alizeh Agnihotri. Set in Britain in the early 1990s, the story follows a generation of young British Asians growing up between cultures. Their voice emerges from garages, backrooms, pirate radio stations and underground gigs, as the dhol collides with British basslines. The makers say it was a time when young brown artists fought their way onto music charts with a unique sound, making their whole community visible. The film explores music, identity, family, friendship and belonging. The ensemble brings together Indian and international actors, musicians and performers. Plot details and a release date have not been announced. Bahl is best known for Queen (2014), Super 30 and Goodbye (2022). His last release was the horror thriller Shaitaan in 2024, starring Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan and Jyotika. He also has Dil Ka Darwaaza Khol Na Darling in the pipeline, starring Jaya Bachchan, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Wamiqa Gabbi.
