Asian Games close in Nagoya; India finishes fourth with 85 medals

The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games officially closed on Sunday. The ceremony began at 6pm local time, 2:30pm IST, at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya.

Double gold medallist shooter Neeru Dhanda carried the Indian flag. The 27-year-old won two golds and a silver in trap shooting, becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games trap gold.

India finished fourth in the medal table with 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. It is India’s second-best Asian Games tally ever.

Cricket delivered double gold as both the men’s and women’s teams won. Archery was India’s most productive sport with five golds. Boxing added three, and both hockey and kabaddi teams won gold.

China topped the table with 341 medals, followed by Japan with 269 and South Korea with 150. The flame was extinguished and hosting duties were formally handed to Doha for the 2030 Games.

India’s best-ever Asian Games result remains the 107 medals from Hangzhou 2022. The Doha Games in 2030 will be the first edition staged in the Middle East since Doha 2006.
