Delhi’s Rs 1,789-crore smart traffic plan, explained

The Union Cabinet has approved a Rs 1,789.52-crore Intelligent Traffic Management System for Delhi. Here is what the plan means.
The system will cover 42 major traffic corridors. At 1,092 locations, adaptive traffic control systems will replace fixed-timer signals. These signals continuously analyse live traffic volumes and adjust green times at junctions and rotaries.
The plan also includes automated enforcement technology at 1,029 sites. Cameras and sensors will detect violations such as red-light jumping, speeding, wrong-way driving, illegal parking, failure to use helmets and seat belts, and mobile phone use while driving.
Implementation will happen in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance. Delhi Police will choose a Master System Integrator through competitive bidding, with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing providing technical monitoring.
The system is expected to create priority green corridors for ambulances and emergency vehicles. Commuters will get live information on bottlenecks, diversions and parking through Variable Message Sign boards and digital platforms.
The need is clear: Delhi has around 71 lakh active registered vehicles, while much traffic regulation still relies on fixed signal timings and manual intervention. The plan aims to turn the network into one connected system that can sense traffic, respond to it and communicate the response to motorists in real time.
