Delhi to get Rs 1,789-crore AI-based traffic management system

The Union Cabinet has approved a Rs 1,789.52-crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for Delhi, covering 42 major traffic corridors across the capital.
The system will install 1,092 Adaptive Traffic Control Systems and automated enforcement technology at 1,029 locations. Unlike conventional fixed-timer signals, adaptive signals will analyse live traffic volumes and adjust timings at junctions in real time.
The project will be implemented by the Delhi Police in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance. A Master System Integrator will be chosen through competitive bidding, while the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) will provide technical monitoring and acceptance as project management consultant.
The ITMS will also create priority green corridors for ambulances and emergency vehicles. Commuters will receive live information on bottlenecks, diversions and parking availability through Variable Message Sign boards and digital platforms.
Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the aim is to integrate earlier traffic measures into "one harmonised Intelligent Traffic Management System". Delhi has around 71 lakh active registered vehicles, and much regulation still relies on fixed timings and manual intervention.
Automated enforcement will detect violations including red-light jumping, speeding, wrong-way driving, illegal parking, failure to use helmets and seat belts, and mobile phone use while driving.
