Germany Announces 2045 Fossil-Fuel Exit Roadmap

Germany has announced a national roadmap to end the use of fossil fuels completely by 2045, citing the Hormuz crisis as a major driver.
It is the third European country to make such a total economy-wide electrification commitment after France and the Netherlands.
Germany currently gets 45 per cent of its electricity from wind and solar and 59 per cent from all non-fossil sources. EVs plus plug-in hybrids hit a record near 39 per cent of new German car sales in August 2026.
Volkswagen is now selling more EVs than fossil fuel cars in Germany for the first time ever, according to industry trackers.
The roadmap turns a crisis-driven shift into a legal commitment. With energy prices still high after the Iran war, Berlin is betting that full electrification is now an economic strategy as much as a climate one. The plan will need detailed sector roadmaps for transport, industry and heating to become real policy.
