Broadcom Matches Nvidia on Samsung Memory Pricing

Broadcom has secured memory chip pricing from Samsung that matches Nvidia’s terms, a sign of its growing power in the AI chip market.

According to reports, Broadcom’s procurement volume has grown so much that its bargaining power is now roughly on par with Nvidia’s. Samsung has been resisting price cuts while leaning on high memory prices.

The deal covers AI memory chips used in custom AI processors. Broadcom makes custom TPU-style chips for major AI labs, competing with Nvidia’s general-purpose GPUs.

Anthropic, the Claude maker, is expected to become Broadcom’s largest customer by 2027. It plans to deploy 5 gigawatts of TPU-based computing in 2027 and double it to 10 gigawatts in 2028.

Reuters reported that Broadcom has also agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42 billion to fund its infrastructure buildout. The financing covers about a third of Anthropic’s $125.2 billion five-year TPU lease commitment.

Broadcom is also working with OpenAI on custom AI accelerators totaling 10 gigawatts of capacity.

Analysts say the shift favors application-specific chips. JPMorgan forecasts specialized chips could overtake GPUs on unit volumes by mid-decade.
