Senescent B cells identified in COPD lungs, study finds

Researchers have identified senescent B cells in the lungs of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. The findings were published on October 4, 2026.

The team used single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics and proteomics to study lung tissue. They found that the ageing B cells show disrupted fat metabolism and impaired development.

The researchers also uncovered a specific interaction between B lymphocytes and lung cells called alveolar type II cells. The ADGRE5-CD55 interaction may drive smoke-related damage.

COPD is a long-term breathing condition that affects millions worldwide. It causes ongoing inflammation and gradual damage to lung tissue.

Senescent cells are often called ‘zombie cells’. They stop dividing but do not die, and they can release harmful molecules into surrounding tissue.

The identification of these cells as a source of inflammation offers a new potential target for future tests and treatments. The work is still at the laboratory stage.

Separately, research in the journal Aging Cell is testing senolytic drugs that clear senescent cells in COPD airways. Early results show reduced lung inflammation.
