Thackeray brothers lead protest march against Election Commission

Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray united on Sunday to lead a major protest march in Mumbai against the Election Commission.

The MNS chief and the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief announced the march at a joint press conference on September 29. They accuse the poll body of acting as an extension of the ruling establishment.

The march assembled at 10:00 AM at Richardson and Cruddas in Byculla, moved toward CSMT and ended near the BMC headquarters with a public meeting.

No party flags were allowed. Participants carried only the Indian Tricolour, to frame the protest as a citizens’ movement for democratic integrity.

Congress and the NCP-SP joined the march. The focus is the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which the opposition says has wronged voters.

The Election Commission says its decisions followed the prescribed process and that internal differences of opinion are natural.

The October 4 march is a Maharashtra-level programme. The INDIA bloc has separately announced an October 6 march to the Election Commission.
