MEA warns Indians against joining Russian armed forces

The Ministry of External Affairs on September 30 issued a fresh advisory strongly discouraging Indians from joining the Russian armed forces.

The ministry said it continues to receive reports of Indian nationals being recruited into the Russian military. It said the government has repeatedly highlighted the risks over the past two years.

The advisory said some people are willingly seeking offers to join the Russian forces, expecting monetary benefits and believing they can later secure release through the Indian government. The MEA called this a dangerous path and said it is strongly discouraged.

It also flagged cases where individuals gave up Indian citizenship, obtained a Russian passport and then joined the Russian forces. The government advised citizens to consider the gravity of such actions and the mortal dangers involved.

The MEA said foreign nationals are being recruited by non-public entities, including voluntary groups. Indians were advised to exercise due diligence and deal only with agents registered with the ministry.

New Delhi said it remains engaged with Moscow to ensure the safety and early discharge of Indians in the Russian forces.
