Russian strikes on Ukraine grid kill seven, force power cuts

Russia launched its heaviest combined assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in months on October 1, killing seven people and triggering emergency power cuts.
Ukrainian officials said the strikes targeted power and heating systems around Kyiv and nearby regions. State grid operator Ukrenergo imposed emergency cuts in the capital and three surrounding regions, the first such measure in Kyiv since spring.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said seven people were killed. The attack involved nearly 190 drones and ballistic missiles. The air force said it downed five missiles and 155 drones.
Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi said on X that Russia had escalated to massive strikes on energy infrastructure. He said a combined strike of this scale had not happened since the end of the last heating season.
Critical infrastructure was hit in five regions, with damage reported in five more. Repair crews are working to restore power. Freezing temperatures are expected in Kyiv in the coming days, raising fears of a difficult winter. Ukraine remains short of air defences.
