Monsoon exits Mumbai as Colaba logs hottest October day

The southwest monsoon withdrew from Mumbai on October 3, five days earlier than its normal date of October 8.
The India Meteorological Department said this was Mumbai’s second-earliest monsoon withdrawal in 25 years. Twenty of Maharashtra’s 36 districts recorded deficient rainfall this season.
The withdrawal has brought an October heat wave. Colaba recorded 37.4 degrees Celsius, the highest October temperature at the observatory in at least 13 years. The reading was 5.6 degrees above normal.
Santacruz recorded 36.9 degrees, which was 4.6 degrees above normal. The all-time October record at Colaba remains 39.5 degrees, set on October 22, 1968.
The IMD has linked the sharp rise to changing wind patterns during the monsoon withdrawal. The delayed sea breeze has kept daytime temperatures high.
Daytime temperatures are expected to stay between 35 and 37 degrees for the next two to three days. Residents have been advised to stay hydrated during afternoon hours.
