Brazil votes today in razor-thin presidential race: what we know

Brazilians are voting today in the first round of the presidential election, pitting incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva against Flavio Bolsonaro.

A final CNT/MDA poll on Saturday showed Lula’s lead narrowing: he would take 43.1% of voter support in the first round to Bolsonaro’s 38%. Datafolha and AtlasIntel surveys also show Lula slightly ahead but the runoff statistically tied.

A final televised debate organised by TV Globo was cancelled on Thursday. The broadcaster cited “legal uncertainty” after rulings from the electoral court and the Supreme Court.

Flavio Bolsonaro said he skipped the debate over “censorship” by the electoral court, referring to a decision that barred the broadcaster from keeping Lula’s empty seat on stage.

On the same day, police ruled out a bomb scare outside the Supreme Court. A backpack thrown on a bus stop contained only personal belongings, authorities said.

If no candidate crosses 50 per cent today, the race goes to a runoff. Results are expected to start coming in through the evening in Brasilia.
