US Sends Third Carrier Group Toward the Middle East

The United States is sending a third aircraft-carrier strike group and additional Marine Corps ships to the Middle East, according to the Wall Street Journal. The deployment adds 9,000 to 10,000 more troops to the region.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt left San Diego on September 27. The USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, carrying Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, departed the following day.
The ships are expected to arrive by the end of November. They will join the USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington, which are already in the region, along with more than 50,000 US troops.
It would be the first three-carrier presence in the region since April, before a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran collapsed. The two sides have fought sporadically since.
President Trump recently told aides he expects to resume bombing Iran in November, the Journal reported. In a TIME interview published October 1, he said it was possible after the midterm elections if no deal is reached.
