Vidya Balan has been introduced as Kantha in Jailer 2, the Rajinikanth-starrer directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on October 15, 2026.

A character video shows Kantha making a striking entrance in a blue saree, calmly smoking a cigarette as she walks down a staircase. Her confident delivery suggests a powerful presence in the story. Expresso Magazine described her as the powerful antagonist of the film.

Jailer 2 reunites Nelson with composer Anirudh Ravichander, whose music powered the first film. Sun Pictures has officially listed Vidya among the cast, which also includes S. J. Suryah and Suraj Venjaramoodu.

Vidya’s slate is packed. She recently began work on a new Tamil film with R. Balki, their first collaboration in 17 years since Paa, and will also reunite with Akshay Kumar in a comedy releasing December 4, 2026.

Why it matters: Vidya’s entry adds a fresh pan-Indian dimension to one of Tamil cinema’s biggest franchises.
