North Korea fires missile after rejecting Seoul apology demand

North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile on October 3. South Korea and Japan confirmed the launch. It came a day after Pyongyang rejected Seoul’s demand for an apology over landmine blasts.
The missile was launched from the Wonsan area at around 6:30 am. It flew more than 700 kilometres before landing in the sea. Japan said it fell outside its exclusive economic zone. No damage was reported.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of leader Kim Jong Un, said the North tested an intermediate-range strategic missile. She said her brother supervised the drill. She claimed it had maneuverable flight and AI capabilities to evade defences. South Korea did not confirm those claims.
The launch followed a September 21 mine explosion in the Demilitarised Zone. South Korea said North Korean mines seriously wounded two soldiers. Pyongyang denied responsibility. Kim Yo Jong ridiculed the apology demand on October 2. South Korea’s security council held an emergency meeting.
