Iraq sets June 2027 deadline for armed factions to disarm

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has set June 30, 2027 as the deadline for armed factions to hand weapons to the state. He announced the roadmap on October 1. It replaces an earlier September 30 target.

Zaidi said October 1 marked a serious start to bringing weapons outside state control under government authority. The date also marked the end of the US-led coalition’s military mission against the Islamic State in Iraq.

The first 90 days will be a freeze. Armed groups will refrain from attacks while US forces refrain from striking them. The factions will then gradually surrender weapons or come under state authority.

Several Iran-backed groups resist the plan. Kataib Hezbollah, Harakat al-Nujaba and Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada are the main holdouts. Kataib Hezbollah said it reached no deal with the premier and wants fresh talks. Baghdad argues that the coalition’s departure removes the militias’ reason to stay armed. Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said Baghdad will present a draft plan with specific timelines in the coming days.
