Police detain protesters in Delhi over voter roll revision row

Police in New Delhi detained several protesters on Saturday. It was the second day of demonstrations against changes to voter rolls.

About 100 demonstrators removed security barricades and chanted slogans. They demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police then detained some of them.

On Friday, police had stopped protesters from gathering near Jantar Mantar. Several metro stations were shut amid tight security. More than 500 people were detained that day, according to reports.

The protests are backed by opposition groups. The Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party held a rally at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, according to Reuters and The Hindu BusinessLine. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also demanded the election chief’s resignation.

Protesters allege large-scale deletion of voters during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Election Commission rejects claims of bias. It says the exercise removes duplicate, dead, and ineligible voters.

On Friday, the Commission directed officials to register newly eligible voters and those left out of the rolls.
