Tom Kim wins golf gold, earns military service exemption

South Korean golfer Tom Kim won the Asian Games gold medal in men’s individual golf on Saturday. The win also earned him an exemption from compulsory military service. Kim, a four-time winner on the US PGA Tour, shot a final round of 64 at the Kasugai Country Club. His 18-under total of 262 left him three strokes clear of Japan’s Kazuki Higa, China’s Ding Wenyi and Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana. Kim also won a team silver with compatriots Mun Do-yeob and Kim Seong-hyeon, finishing behind China. South Korea grants military exemptions to athletes who win Asian Games gold or any Olympic medal. Able-bodied men must otherwise serve 18 to 21 months. Kim, 24, will now complete only about four weeks of basic training instead. He missed a medal at the Paris Olympics two years ago. The jet-lagged star called Saturday the longest day of his life. Football star Son Heung-min earned the same exemption after winning Asian Games gold in 2018. The rule has shaped the careers of many Korean athletes. Kim said Saturday was the longest day of his life.
