Christa Pike Survives Botched Tennessee Execution Try

Christa Pike survived Tennessee’s attempt to execute her by lethal injection late on September 30, prison officials said. She would have been the first woman executed in the state in over two centuries.

The 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals had ordered a stay less than two hours before the scheduled execution. The US Supreme Court then vacated the stay, with Justices Sotomayor, Kagan and Jackson dissenting.

The execution went ahead at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Pike’s lawyers filed a motion during the process saying witnesses reported she was still alive after both syringes were injected. She was taken to an off-site medical facility.

Pike, now 50, was 18 in January 1995 when she killed 19-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer. The pair’s boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp got life with parole possibility.

Her clemency petition citing childhood trauma and abuse was denied by Governor Bill Lee. What legal steps come next is not yet clear.
