What is recurve archery? Kumkum Mohod’s gold, explained

Kumkum Mohod won India’s first women’s individual recurve archery gold at the Asian Games on Saturday. Here is what the event involves.
Recurve archery uses the classic curved bow seen at the Olympics. It is different from compound archery, which uses pulleys and is not an Olympic event.
Matches are decided over sets. Each archer shoots three arrows per set. A set win earns two points, a tie earns one. The first to six points wins the match.
If the score is tied at 5-5, a shoot-off decides it. Each archer shoots one arrow. The one closest to the centre wins.
Kumkum beat South Korea’s Oh Yejin 6-5 in such a shoot-off. Oh shot an 8; Kumkum shot a perfect 10.
South Korea has dominated this event for decades. In 12 Asian Games editions, Korea had missed gold only three times before. A 17-year-old Indian beating Korea is a seismic result.
