Tamil Nadu suspends two officials over Hindi signboard

The Tamil Nadu government has suspended two highways department officials after Hindi words appeared on a state highway signboard.
The signboard was installed on the Sathankulam-Nazareth State Highway, or SH-93, in Thoothukudi district. In addition to Tamil and English, town names were embossed in Hindi.
The Assistant Executive Engineer and the Assistant Engineer of the highways department were placed under suspension. Departmental action has also been started against them.
The government said the signboard violated the state’s two-language policy of Tamil and English. It warned of tough action against officials who violate the policy.
The Hindi words were erased overnight after images of the signboard went viral on social media. New boards with only Tamil and English will be installed.
Officials said the new signboard had been built for the Sathankulam to Nazareth road, which cost several lakh rupees. The Hindi lettering appeared prominently right after Tamil, unlike most boards where it is last.
DMK chief and former Chief Minister M K Stalin criticised the Vijay-led TVK government. He warned against any attempt to change the state’s two-language policy.
