Malaysia’s Lee Chean Chung resigns as Petaling Jaya MP

Lee Chean Chung has resigned as the Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya in Malaysia. The resignation takes effect immediately.
Lee submitted his resignation letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul on October 1. He announced the decision at a press conference on October 2.
The move followed the suspension of his membership of the People’s Justice Party, or PKR, for three years. He was informed of the suspension on September 30.
Lee said he could not continue accepting an MP’s salary while being unable to perform his duties. He said he would also leave PKR by October 5.
He linked the suspension to his outspoken views on issues including the Urban Renewal Act, foreign worker recruitment and the sales and service tax.
Lee said he intends to contest the next general election in Petaling Jaya. He added that his parliamentary service centre will remain open for the community.
Lee is the fourth PKR MP to vacate a seat after internal party tensions. PKR’s strength in the Dewan Rakyat now stands at 27 seats.
