700 Detained at Delhi Protest Against Election Commission Chief

Delhi Police detained more than 700 protesters at Jantar Mantar on Friday during a demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters were raising concerns about the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Those detained included AAP leaders Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj and Sanjay Singh, along with student activists. Delhi Police said permission for the gathering had not been granted. Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which restricts public assemblies, was imposed across the New Delhi district.
Eleven central Delhi Metro stations had their entry and exit restricted as part of the security arrangements. A Delhi Police officer said some people sustained injuries at the site.
In parallel, activists of the Cockroach Janata Party staged a protest at Shivaji Park in Mumbai against the Election Commission and the revision exercise.
The protesters allege that voter rolls were manipulated in ways favouring the BJP. The Election Commission and the government have denied the allegations. The commission has said differing views are a normal part of internal deliberations.
