Trump admin restores legal aid for migrant children

Washington, Oct 3 — The Trump administration has rescinded a stop-work order on federally funded legal services for unaccompanied migrant children.

The Acacia Center for Justice said it received notice that it can “immediately resume work providing representation and legal access services to unaccompanied children.”

The Interior Department had sent the stop-work order on Tuesday, directing the center to “cease all services and the ordering of supplies” under its federal contract for migrants under 18.

Acacia’s executive director Shaina Aber welcomed the reversal and said the center will work with the Department of Health and Human Services to fully restore services.

The order had threatened legal help for vulnerable children seeking safety. Acacia said its partners are “legal lifelines safeguarding the rights and well-being of children.” The center asked that work continue “without future disruption or delay.” The center’s network serves children who fled violence, trafficking and abuse. Advocates say legal counsel is often the only oversight of their treatment.
