1,949 Arrested as France School Protests Turn Violent

France saw one of its most tense protest days in recent months on Thursday. Police arrested 1,949 people as demonstrations over planned teacher job cuts turned violent in several cities.
About 305 police officers were injured in clashes, officials said. More than 160 schools were shut, and protesters set up around 900 road blockades across the country.
The protests were triggered by a government plan to cut 4,018 teaching posts. Unions say the cuts will worsen overcrowded classrooms and hurt students in poor areas.
The government argues the cuts are needed to balance the budget. Education unions have called the plan an attack on public schools.
Demonstrations began peacefully in many cities but escalated by evening. Police used tear gas and water cannons in Paris and other cities.
Unions have threatened more strikes if the government does not withdraw the plan. Talks between ministers and union leaders are expected next week.
