Reddit API shutdown: what changes and when

Reddit's public data era is ending. Here is what is happening, in order.
From October 31, 2026, Reddit stops accepting new public API requests. On November 13, 2026, public RSS feeds shut down. On January 12, 2027, unregistered apps lose access entirely. By March 2027, the public API is gone for good.
Who is affected? Researchers, archivists, moderation tool builders and the makers of more than 14,000 independent apps that run on Reddit's free data. Ordinary browsing and the official apps are unaffected.
Why now? Reddit says large-scale data use should go through licensed access. It already sells data to Google and OpenAI, and has sued Anthropic and Perplexity over alleged scraping. The free API, it argues, subsidises commercial AI training.
What can developers do? Reddit has set up a one-million-dollar migration fund to help move off the public API. Options include applying for licensed enterprise access, rebuilding on limited free tiers where offered, or shutting down. The deadlines are fixed, so planning needs to start now.
