Who Is Anup Bagchi? Why HDFC Bank’s Outsider Pick Matters

Anup Bagchi’s appointment as HDFC Bank’s next chief executive breaks a three-decade tradition. Here is why the choice of an outsider is significant.
Bagchi has spent his entire career, since 1992, with the ICICI Group, most recently as MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance. He is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIM Bangalore, with deep experience across banking, insurance and capital markets.
HDFC Bank has been led by insiders for about 32 years, with leadership passing from Aditya Puri to Sashidhar Jagdishan. Bringing in an outsider signals the board’s desire for fresh perspective as the bank digests its merger with HDFC Ltd, the largest such deal in Indian corporate history.
The RBI’s approval under Section 35B of the Banking Regulation Act, for a three-year term from October 27, 2026, removes the last uncertainty. Bagchi joins as Additional Director from October 2.
His test will be sustaining growth and asset quality at India’s largest private lender while integrating two giant balance sheets.
