AI Now Top Reason for US Job Cuts: 120,136 in 2026

Artificial intelligence has become the leading stated reason for job cuts in the United States this year, according to new data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
Through nine months of 2026, American employers attributed 120,136 announced job cuts to AI. That is about 21 percent of the 573,195 total cuts tracked. The figure is more than double the AI-attributed cuts in all of 2025.
The honest reading is less dramatic than the headline. September itself was quiet, with 43,281 cuts, down 18 percent from August. The year-to-date total is 39 percent below 2025’s pace.
Technology leads all industries with 165,925 cuts, up 54 percent year on year. Meanwhile, hiring plans are weak. Employers announced 90,787 hiring plans in September, the lowest September total since 2011.
What it means: AI did not climb to the top through a wave of mass layoffs. Other reasons for cuts fell away faster, leaving AI as the leading label. The pattern looks like slow substitution at the margin, not a sudden job wipeout.
Why it matters: the data shows companies are already acting on AI, even as the technology itself keeps getting cheaper. How fast the shift goes is now the open question.
