Short-drama apps now rule India’s top entertainment charts
Short-drama apps have crashed India’s entertainment charts. Six of the top 12 free entertainment apps in the country are now built around microdramas, with one beating Netflix and Prime Video outright.
According to AppBrain’s September 30 ranking, VibeShort: AI Short Dramas took the No. 1 spot, ahead of Netflix at No. 2 and Amazon Prime Video at No. 3. StoryReel ranked No. 6, NetShort No. 7, DramaBox No. 9, FlickReels No. 10 and MVShort No. 11.
The format is simple: vertical, bite-sized episodes of a few minutes, packed with dramatic twists and cliffhangers. Viewers often discover the first episode on Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts, then download the app to keep watching.
The trend is bigger than one chart. The FICCI-EY report notes Kuku TV, Story TV and Quick TV among the most-downloaded video apps, while ZEE5, Prime Video and JioHotstar have launched their own microdrama verticals.
What was once a fringe experiment is now one of the most closely watched shifts in India’s streaming economy.
