India women win hockey gold after 44 years

India’s women’s hockey team beat China 1-0 in the Asian Games final on Friday to win the gold medal, ending a 44-year wait.
Lalremsiami scored the only goal of the match in the 10th minute at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium. Sakshi Rana’s pass found her, and her strike beat the Chinese goalkeeper.
It is India’s first women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games since 1982. India had finished runners-up in 1998 and 2018.
The start of the match was delayed by 45 minutes after both teams’ buses were caught in a traffic jam caused by a road accident.
India reached the final by beating South Korea 2-0 in the semifinal, with goals from Ishika Chaudhary and captain Salima Tete.
India won all seven matches at the tournament, scoring 69 goals and conceding just three. The gold also confirmed India’s qualification for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Japan finished third and South Korea fourth in the final tournament standings.
