NATO’s ‘Naughty List’ Rift: What It Means

The Pentagon is planning a NATO meeting in Poland that has left out some major allies. According to a Politico report published on September 30, which cited six diplomats, the Trump administration will exclude Britain, France and the Baltic states from a working group on NATO’s future. The meeting is being led by Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon’s policy chief. The invited group includes Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands. It is informally called the Bergen Group after its first meeting in Bergen, Norway, in June. An official from an excluded country told Politico: ‘We are doing everything that is being asked of us.’ The move follows earlier warnings by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth about a ‘naughty or nice’ list for allies. Colby has said participation is linked to meeting NATO defence spending targets agreed in The Hague. The Pentagon declined to comment on the report. Diplomats say the divide has confused allies, since the excluded countries are among NATO’s biggest defence spenders.
