Explained: How Delhi’s Rs 1,789 Crore AI Traffic Plan Works

Delhi is getting a Rs 1,789.52 crore AI traffic system. Here is how it will work. The Intelligent Traffic Management System will cover 42 corridors. It will be built in three phases over 24 months.
The system uses 1,092 adaptive traffic signals. These signals read live traffic and change timings on their own. Fixed-time signals will no longer be the norm. There are also 1,029 enforcement cameras.
They will detect red-light jumping, speeding and wrong-way driving. The cameras can also spot stolen and blacklisted vehicles. AI will flag repeat offenders for action.
Emergency vehicles get special treatment. The system will create green corridors for ambulances at busy junctions. Coordinated signals will clear their path through congestion.
Commuters will see updates on digital display boards. The data will also flow to navigation apps. That means route suggestions will reflect real conditions. The Delhi Police will run the system with technology support from C-DAC.
