China Halts October Fuel Exports Beyond Hong Kong, Macau

China’s refiners have suspended exports of oil products for October after receiving instructions from Beijing, according to Reuters. The reported halt covers destinations beyond Hong Kong and Macau.
The products affected include gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. Reuters reported that PetroChina had already cancelled a significant share of its October shipments of gasoline and jet fuel. Analysts quoted by Reuters said the move shows Beijing is putting domestic energy security ahead of export sales.
The decision coincides with China’s National Day holiday, known as Golden Week. Domestic travel and fuel use rise during the holiday, which makes inventory control a priority for refiners and officials.
Diesel matters most for Asia because regional supplies were already tight before the freeze. Buyers may now look to other sources, which can affect regional prices and refinery margins. China is a major refining centre, so shifts in its export flows ripple through Asian fuel markets.
Market analysts will watch Chinese refinery runs, domestic inventories and any new export guidance. A short pause may have a limited effect. A longer freeze would remove more fuel from international markets, and exports could resume after Golden Week if stocks recover.
