Anthropic Launches Claude Sonnet 5.5, Faster and Cheaper Per Task

Anthropic has launched Claude Sonnet 5.5, a mid-tier AI model that the company says runs more than 30 per cent faster and costs up to 30 per cent less per task than its predecessor.
The token prices are unchanged at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. The savings come from needing fewer tokens and fewer tool calls to complete the same work, Anthropic said.
On Terminal-Bench 4.0, an agentic coding test, Sonnet 5.5 scored 70.6 per cent, far ahead of Sonnet 5’s 10.3 per cent and slightly above the pricier Opus 5.5’s 66.4 per cent. It also became the first Sonnet model to beat Nintendo’s Pokemon Red using only screenshots.
Anthropic positioned it as a faster, lower-cost complement to the flagship Opus 5.5, built for well-scoped everyday tasks, bug fixes and polished documents, slides and spreadsheets.
The model is available now across Claude apps and platforms, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. A smaller Claude Haiku 5.5 for high-volume uses will follow in the coming weeks.
