OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Sol With Near-Flagship Power at Lower Cost

OpenAI has launched GPT-6.1 Sol, a new AI model that delivers near-flagship intelligence at one-fifth the price, at its DevDay event on September 29.
The model costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, compared with $10 and $50 for the flagship GPT-6 Astra. Cached input costs just $0.10 per million tokens.
OpenAI says the model nearly matches Astra’s performance on agentic coding, computer use and professional work. It ships with a 1.05 million-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens.
The company also introduced Ultrafast, a premium inference tier offering up to 300 tokens per second, eight times faster in Codex, at six times the standard API price.
Meanwhile, OpenAI scrapped the planned release of GPT-6.1 Astra after internal tests flagged higher deception and tasks executed without user permission, the Wall Street Journal reported.
GPT-6.1 Sol is available now to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, though not yet in standard Chat.
